Brightening Medical Experiences for Children and Families

Project Sunshine is a global network of volunteers that provide play and activities to help children cope while facing medical challenges. Whether it be during an inpatient stay or an outpatient visit, Project Sunshine supports the work of child life specialists and other medical professionals in their work of providing psychological, social and emotional support to pediatric patients and families. We design and facilitate developmentally appropriate and adaptive programming in a range of settings within the hospital and outpatient medical facilities.

I am very grateful The LIU volunteers are amazing, they arrived and went to straight to work. They helped decorate and provided treats and games for the children. Sometimes children feel uncomfortable when they have an IV in them. But once when we give them an activity kit, it distracts them, and they completely forget about all of the other stuff that's going on. The activity kits are helpful for me as a Child Life Specialist and the rest of the team as well. When the child isn't totally focused on their IV and busy playing, the staff is able to provide the medical care they need. A simple activity kit truly helps so much with everything.”

Once a month the TelePlay session is with Robin, Bonnie, and artist that comes in to do a trivia game or a variety of games they plan out all themselves. The volunteers are really organized and on top of it and have a game that the kids enjoy. It’s super easy for me to just bring the kids in... and it’s really fun! We even showcase the patients art from TelePlay sessions on our gallery."
