Meet Nabanita. She has always loved working with children, devoting time to babysit neighbors and cousins and tutor young students throughout high school. When she discovered Project Sunshine and its unique mission during her freshman year at Hunter College, she knew she had to join.
After volunteering at her college chapter for three years, Nabanita advanced as a Chapter Leader, guiding a dynamic and incredibly strong group of volunteers to comfort and empower countless patients and families. “I love Project Sunshine because of the valuable experiences it has given me, “ she reflects as she now prepares to graduate. “I have been able to volunteer at hospitals all over New York City and work with children of different ages, all of which were novel and interesting learning experiences.”
For Nabanita, Project Sunshine’s volunteer-centered activities illuminated the fundamental role of compassion in the healing process and profoundly impacted her decision to attend medical school.
“Seeing the smile on a child’s face when we finish doing a craft kept me coming back to Project Sunshine events for the past four years,” she explains, “and is still a reason I attend now!” As an aspiring doctor, she hopes to embrace her experiences at Project Sunshine to continue offering patients and families integral emotional care during medical treatment.
