Project Sunshine’s pioneering model in China balances a traditional approach to Chinese healthcare while emphasizing patient social and emotional well-being. Project Sunshine’s most active volunteer corps are social work students from China Women’s University who gain valuable hands-on medical experience with pediatric patients while delivering Project Sunshine’s programs at partner medical facilities.

Hospitals treat children facing a range of health challenges, including congenital heart disease, the leading cause of birth defects in China. For these patients experiencing extended hospitalizations and lengthy family separation, Project Sunshine volunteers offset patient isolation by socializing with and bringing comfort to cardiac patients through interactive games, creative arts and crafts and literacy activities.
