Volunteer Spotlight: Bowdoin College
Mariely Garcia and Perla Rubi recently co-founded Project Sunshine´s first chapter in Maine at Bowdoin College!
One childhood memory in particular encouraged Mariely to reach out to the Project Sunshine National Office to start the process of
founding a chapter. She remembered going to the hospital with her mother as a childfeeling especially anxious and really dreading
her appointment she nervously entered the waiting room. It just so happens that that day there were two volunteers there doing crafts
and they encouraged Mariely to join them. She was hesitant at first, but joined them in the activities and soon felt at ease. Mariely
remembers leaving the waiting room with a wonderful keepsake that changed her perception of being in the hospital.
Despite just starting this fall, the Bowdoin Chapter has already had three successful programs at its partner medical facility in Maine.
Their first program was a musical themed Creative Arts and Crafts event where children could decorate various musical instruments
and then take them with them to perform for family, friends and hospital staff. The volunteers left knowing that they brightened the day
of several children, especially one special girl:
"There was one little girl left at the table. She had several instruments, which she had made laid out in front of her. She was
coloring in a new tambourine, tapping her feet, and rocking out to ´Life is a Highway´ by Rascal Flatts. In that moment, she looked
like she was having the time of her life. It made me feel so happy to know that we were part of that. I dont think I will ever
forget the wonderfully big smile she had as we said our goodbyes."
