Volunteer Spotlight: Jasleen Brar
December 1, 2016
In 2011, Jasleen Brar was a founding member of the Hunter College Project Sunshine chapter in New York City. At the time, Jasleen had experience volunteering with Project Sunshine's community chapters, and wanted to help bring Project Sunshine to her university. Under Jasleen's leadership, the Hunter College chapter did an incredible job with a special Sunshine at Work program, working closely with teenage patients with chronic illness to support them in applying for college and in building important life skills. In addition, they were go-to volunteers for special hospital programs around the city.
After graduating, Jasleen started volunteering with the Sunshine Chefs Chapter at Henry Street Settlement, which delivers a wide range of social service, arts, and health care programs to New Yorkers. She says, "I look forward to this monthly event where we create nutritious and delicious meals with seasonal and healthy ingredients. It also gives me great ideas on what to cook at home for myself! I strongly believe food is the perfect way to bring people together, especially when you are cooking as a community and sharing a wonderful meal." When speaking about volunteering with Project Sunshine, Jasleen says, "Project Sunshine's mission resonates with me and is something I believe in strongly. Volunteering with Project sunshine has always brought a smile to my face, especially when I see a child who is just happy to see a caring face and is enthusiastic to learn, create or just be provided with a happy distraction."
Jasleen has become one of the most dedicated volunteers for the Sunshine Chefs program. The two wonderful Chapter Leaders at Henry Street Settlement, Mariya Dvoretskaya and Ashley Tufts, had this to say about Jasleen, "Our kids love when Jasleen comes to Henry Street, because she brings such enthusiasm and knowledge to cooking. It's wonderful to see the way she connects with the kids and her positivity and cheerful attitude brightens every event...even if we have a cooking fail!" Project Sunshine is lucky to have Jasleen as a volunteer for over five years, and looks forward to many more!
