Volunteer Spotlight: UnitedHealth Group Phoenix
In early 2015, Project Sunshine´s UnitedHealth Group chapter in Phoenix, Arizona began to volunteer at
Children´s Rehabilitative Services, a local medical facility where pediatric patients receive long–term
rehabilitative care. Led by Sue Riordan, the volunteers brighten the facility´s waiting rooms with exciting
arts and crafts activities for the children and families. Instead of waiting anxiously for their appointments,
patients can now have fun with their new friends from Project Sunshine!
Suzanne, a Child Life Specialist at CRS notes that the UnitedHealth Group volunteers "are all so positive and energetic.
The enthusiasm they exhibit while working with the participants just draws the children into the activities. It is often
hard to pull the children away." Project Sunshine is proud that when it is ultimately time to leave, patients are able to
walk away from the crafts taking a bit of the volunteers´ contagious positive energy with them into their doctor´s
appointments and the rest of their days.
Meanwhile, working with the children also brings a sense of giving back and joy to the volunteers. The chapter loves
having "the opportunity to interact with families in the community" and making "the children happy, and seeing their
enthusiasm and joy. They focus on the fun, not their medical problem," share the volunteers.
Project Sunshine thanks the UnitedHealth Group – Phoenix volunteers for their amazing ability to brighten the hospital
environment for the children and families at Children´s Rehabilitative Services in Phoenix, Arizona, and looks
forward to all the programs to come!
