Volunteer Spotlight: University of Miami

The University of Miami Chapter has a special annual tradition. Every spring, after a year of providing Creative Arts and Crafts programming to children every week, the chapter puts on a big Party Time event at their local hospital. This past spring Project Sunshine at UMiami volunteers: Paige McGlynn, Ana Rodriguez, Becca Ploetz, Jenna Myles, Julia Chong, Kristen Zayan, Katie Marcus, Neelima Gaddipati and Zoey Spiegelman worked together to transform a sterile hospital room into a bright and cheery carnival. The white walls were decorated with colorful carnival themed decorations, fun games were set up, prizes put out, and special crafts like mask making were set up.

Coordinating this special event takes time and effort from planning to setting up, but Paige McGlynn, UMiami Co–Chapter Leader, knows that this is a reward within itself–her most memorable moment from the Carnival was, "watching all of our chapter´s;s hard work transform the energy of the hospital, and enjoying watching patients and their families make memories together."

Having this annual tradition of putting on a big Party Time event is something that the Project Sunshine at University of Miami chapter loves doing as the culmination to their year of Project Sunshine programming. As Paige states, "It´s something I look forward to at the end of every school year!"
