Volunteer Spotlight: San Francisco Chapter Leader - Edwin Icban

Project Sunshine Chapter Leader - Edwin Icban

Edwin Icban first started volunteering with Project Sunshine ten years ago when he met Project
Sunshine´s founder, Joseph Weilgus, at a Project Sunshine event in San Francisco that Edwins friend organized. After hearing Joseph´s passion and dedication to Project Sunshines mission, Edwin decided to become a volunteer.

Since then, Edwin has participated in arts & crafts programs and other fun activities as part of Project Sunshine´s San Francisco Chapter, volunteering weekly at UCSF Benioff Children´s Hospital and Children´s Hospital and Research Center Oakland. According to Edwin, his most memorable moments are when the patients and siblings ask if he can stay longer or ask ´When are you coming back?´. Those are the nights when I know we made them smile and they enjoyed our company.

Volunteering with Project Sunshine has not only given Edwin a chance to share his heart and smile with others, it has also provided him with a leadership opportunity. In 2012, Edwin took over as the Chapter Leader for his San Francisco Chapter. This role gives Edwin the opportunity to coordinate the weekly hospital visits and plan the array of creative arts and crafts activities available to children and family members in San Francisco and Oakland.

"Not only have I contributed my time to Project Sunshine, I feel that I leave a piece of me with the kids, their families, and parents. Every time I come out of a volunteer night, I come out feeling a bit stronger and happier knowing that I made a new friend today. I see myself as a ray of sunshine gleaming into the hearts of the kids."

We congratulate Edwin on his ten years of service dedicated to the children and families of Project Sunshine!
