Volunteer Spotlight: Project Sunshine Canada
Project Sunshine Canada volunteer Katherine Weishar first learned about Project Sunshine through the
Volunteer Toronto website. Katherine recalls why she decided to take the step to sign up and become a
volunteer, "The thought of providing a supportive service to children in need struck at my very core.
I knew that I had to help. And Project Sunshine provides light, cheer and smiles during a difficult time
for children and their families."
The Toronto Project Sunshine Arts and Crafts Team is a group of devoted, compassionate and caring
individuals that love to spread joy and happiness, one smile at a time. The team distributes craft
kits every other Thursday to the children who find themselves at The Hospital for Sick Children.
Following the deliveries, the in–house SickKids television show broadcasts a Project Sunshine
volunteer assembling the craft for the children who are tuning in to the show to follow along.
On average, 130 craft kits are given away each delivery day, and the program is a phenomenal
Katherine´s experience volunteering with Project Sunshine Canada at SickKids Hospital can be
summed up in her own words: "I love being a part of the Project Sunshine community. The ability
to lessen the impact of a child´s illness by lifting up their spirit with a smile is heart–warming,
soul-inspiring, hopeful and hugely important. Caring for our children is a necessary initiative to
creating positive change for both the present and our future. And it begins within me and what I
can offer. I hope that this initiative spreads to many more teams across Canada!"
