For almost 3 years, employees from BNP Paribas have dedicated one Saturday every month to children treated at St. Marys Hospital for
Children in Bayside, New York. BNP Paribas´ dedication to volunteerism is exemplary, as are the relationships the employee volunteers have
formed with St. Marys young patients.
"What is special about Project Sunshine is how regularly they come," explains Allison McGeough, a St. Mary´s staff member. "The kids know
Project Sunshine is thinking about them and it gives them something to look forward to." Patients receiving long-term care at St. Mary´s face
life-limiting medical conditions that can be distressing and isolating. BNP Paribas´ lively volunteer corps brings a special delight to St.
Marys patients and elicits from these courageous children a unique capacity for joy. One patient who has been attending Project Sunshine programs
for several years says, "Project Sunshine is fun and exciting. I like the crafts that they bring with them. The Project Sunshine people are nice."
The volunteers, too, are inspired by the relationships they have formed with the patients. "Working with the kids at St. Mary´s through Project
Sunshine has been an extraordinarily rewarding experience," says Rob Melendez, a BNP Paribas Project Sunshine volunteer. "I hope I´m contributing
as much to the happiness and well-being of the kids as they do for me." In the past year, BNP volunteers devoted nearly 1,000 hours of their time,
serving 2,500 pediatric patients and their families at St. Marys and other hospitals throughout New York City.
This April, as Project Sunshine celebrates National Volunteer Month, we salute the BNP Paribas employee volunteers who
have brought sunshine to so many children.
