Volunteer Spotlight: UnitedHealthcare Chicago

Project Sunshine´'s UnitedHealthcare Chapter in Chicago has brightened the days of hundreds of patients and families receiving treatment at Advocate Children´s Hospital at Park Ridge. Founded in 2013, this chapter has worked tirelessly to bring arts and crafts activities and delicious Sunshine Chefs recipes to the children.

In 2014, the chapter took great strides to grow their volunteer membership, which allowed them to bring joy to over 350 patients and families throughout the year. Denise Morrissey Chaveriat, Child Life Specialist at Advocate Childrens Hospital, is grateful for the programming the chapter provides to her families. "I love that the volunteers are always so cheerful and ready to have fun," Denise says. "Families laugh with Project Sunshine volunteers and enjoy their visits." Each month, the group choses a seasonal theme for their program, and picks creative arts activities and a recipe to match. In September, the group held a back to school party with notebooks and lunch bags to decorate and a recipe for a fun after school snackhealthy mini strawberry cheesecakes!

Recently, volunteers have even begun visiting patients who are unable to leave their hospital rooms. These special visits engage patients, many of whom have not been able to leave their hospital room for days, by bringing tote bags filled with the arts and crafts. The children unpack the colorful bags to discover fun activities that allow them to express their creativity and keep them entertained.

Project Sunshine Chapter Leader Ingrid Bard always goes above and beyond to make the programs shine! "We genuinely LOVE attending these events and I know our volunteer team is so excited for the 2015 year, as it will be the best one yet." Project Sunshine certainly agrees!
